Kathmandu – the Long Way
A vacation in Kathmandu sounded great – but overland? And in a month? We sent journalist Nick Jones to see if it was really possible.
"I liked the idea. I always wanted to go to Nepal and they were going to give me a month – fantastic. But then they told me. Most of the vacation wasn't in Kathmandu at all. It was in an old Ford cargo truck. My reward was going to be five days in the capital of Nepal before flying back to London.
"When I saw the truck, things didn't get any better. Until I went inside. There were beds, a fridge, a sofa and even a television. I cheered up immediately.
"And the journey was incredible. We left London planning to get to Turkey as fast as possible, and there the real journey began. Incredible mountains, vast deserts and everywhere wonderful people. It was the vacation of a lifetime.
"But the best thing was Kathmandu. After three weeks on the road, the Kathmandu Guest House was like a dream. Even compared to our truck."
Nick traveled with Miles Away Travels. He stayed in Kathmandu courtesy of the Kathmandu Guest Hotel and returned to the UK with British Airlines.

Choose ONE of the alternatives below.
Alternative 1 – A news story
It's the
year 2025. The Hilton has announced the opening of the Lunar
Hilton. You are one of a select group of journalists invited
by the Hilton on the first trip to stay in the hotel.
Write an article for your newspaper informing readers about the vacation. Write about 150 words. Include information about the journey, the hotel and the thing you liked most about the vacation.
TIP: Look through the work you have been doing in this unit. Make a note of any useful vocabulary and language that you could use for your article.

Alternative 2 – Planning and organising
Write to your tutor explaining about a future project or an event that you have planned, for example, a hobby project or event, a trip, or a project at work.
First, read the two examples below and note down the answers to these questions:
Example 1
I have a friend who is a painter, and this Saturday she is organising an open day at her studio, which is in a small village not far from where I live. She shares her studio with another painter, so they are preparing a small exhibition for us. It is also my friend's birthday, so she is arranging for us to have lunch as well, to celebrate her birthday. I intend to take my camera and take photos and video of the countryside and the animals there. Hopefully, it will be a fine day. This would mean that the day would be more enjoyable for us and the photos and video would be better. I'm looking forward to this day out of the city.
Example 2
In our department, one of the staff members is leaving next month, so we are arranging to look for someone new to take her place. We are preparing a job description so that we can advertise the job and find someone with the right skills and experience. I think that it's important to have an accurate and complete job description and to know what kind of person you are looking for. We plan to advertise this job next week. We intend to find another person quickly. This would mean that our planned work and projects for the next few months would not be delayed too much. However, it's also important to look for the best person for the job, and sometimes this takes longer.
Now compare your answers with the correct answers.
1. Example 2 is about work.
2. Example 1 is about a hobby.
3. The planned event in example 1 will probably happen first.
Write about 150 words. Check spelling, grammar and organization before sending the text to your tutor.
