6. Healthy Living:   Problems

1. Read: Problems.

Read letters from a problem page, and then complete the exercise below.

Dear Gilly and Joe,

I’ve got a big problem. I’ve got a big school project to do for next week and I haven’t started it. I feel very worried. Also, I have my other schoolwork, too. AND I have an online pen pal that I should send a letter to. What should I do? Can you suggest anything?

Thanks,
Lots-of-Schoolwork Suzy

Dear Gilly and Joe,

I need some advice. I have our school swimming competition next week and I’m really nervous. I want to win. I’m a fast swimmer, but when I am nervous I think it is impossible to win. Can you help me?

Thanks a lot,
Swimming Sam

Dear Gilly and Joe,

I have a big problem. I'm always very tired! I can’t get up in the morning, and I went to sleep in school yesterday! One day I went to sleep on the bus and I missed my bus stop. What should I do? Help! This is a big problem.

Thanks,
Sleepy Sarah

Dear Gilly and Joe,

I’ve got a question. My school is going on a trip to the beach next week. We are going by coach. We are going to sleep in tents. I don’t know what to take with me. What should I take? I want to take everything, but that's impossible!

Thanks,
Sunny Steve

Choose the correct name for each sentence.

2. Read: Solutions.

Read a solution to Suzy's problem from the previous exercise. What is the advice? Order the pictures.

Dear Suzy,

What a big problem! Here is some advice for you: First, why don’t you make a list of exactly what you need to do? A list will help you to be organised. Put the most important things at the top of the list.

Then, after you write the list, start work! How about starting on your big project immediately? If you have a big project to work on, you should do a little bit every day.

After that, why don’t you write a quick email to your pen pal to explain your situation? A good friend should understand your problem. And finally, don't work on your schoolwork all night! You should sleep at least eight hours a night and eat a healthy breakfast, too.

We hope this helps you!

Regards,
Gilly and Joe

3. Language focus: Obligation and permission.

Here are two ways to give advice that you looked at before.

You should sleep eight hours every night.
You shouldn’t read in the dark.

Here are two more ways to give advice:

How about starting on your big project now?
How about + verb + -ing

Why don’t you make a list of exactly what you need to do?
Why don’t you
+ verb

Choose the correct option to make more advice sentences.
