1. Features.

Match the words to the picture they correspond to.

2. Word formation: adjectives.

Read the text. Change the words in the text boxes to form adjectives.

3. Compound adjectives:

These are the most common patterns for forming compound adjectives:

1 adjective or number + noun + -ed
grey-haired, one-sided
2 adjective or adverb + past participle
low-paid, well-behaved, clean-shaven
3 adjective, adverb or noun + present participle
good-looking, long-lasting, man-eating

Make adjectives from these definitions.

For example:

  a person with broad shoulders broad-shouldered

4. Describing people.

Read these two descriptions and decide which of the pictures best match the description.

5. Text reconstruction.

From memory, put the sentences of Text A in order by clicking and dragging. There is one sentence from Text B included which doesn't fit; put it in the red box at the bottom.

6. Write.

Choose one of these people and imagine an encounter with them on, for example, a train, bus or plane.

Write your description in three paragraphs as if it were the beginning of a novel. Include a description of their appearance, your reaction to it, and the first conversation between you. Write approximately 150-200 words.
