food is called osechi-ryori. It consists of many different
kinds of dishes.
It's a Japanese tradition to eat osechi-ryori during the New
Year holidays (until 3 January). Traditionally, people cook osechi dishes before New Year's Eve so they can have food for a couple days without cooking. |

Now look at the recipe of an osechi-ryori dish called tazukuri.
Choose the correct picture of this dish.
Tazukuri* (osechi: teriyaki-dried sardines)
Ingredients:
2 cups dried sardines
2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 teaspoon rice wine
2 teaspoons white sesame seeds
How to cook:
1. Put the dried sardines
in a frying pan and fry them well.
2. Put the sugar, soy sauce
and wine in a pan and put it on a high burner.
3. When the sugar mixture
is thick,
add the dried sardines.
4. Turn off the burner and
stir well.
5. Sprinkle the sesame seeds.
6. Cool it before serving.
*Makes 4 servings.
