Syntax

Start, stop or continue a process

To describe the beginning, end or continuation of a process we normally use the form verb + -ing.
  • I started walking at nine o'clock.
  • She stopped crying and washed her face.
  • Keep going until you reach the main square.

Other verbs that follow this pattern are start, begin, commence, stop, finish, quit, give up, continue, carry on, keep (on) and go on.
