Some phrases, called submodifiers, can be used to exaggerate or minimise the difference between things. Look at these examples.

  • A decent sized salad is by far the healthier option. (by far exaggerates the difference)
  • That restaurant isn't quite as good as it used to be. (not quite minimises the difference)

Here are some other expressions that can be used as submodifiers when making comparisons.

a bit not nearly a lot considerably almost by far
