1. Make someone laugh.

Pay attention to this pattern:

make + noun + infinitive without to

It made me laugh.
Not: It made me to laugh.

Other verbs that follow this pattern are let and help.

Put the words in order to make sentences.

Now you should go to TUTORIAL 1 and do exercise 1. When you have finished, return to GRAMMAR exercise 2.

2. The -ing form.

Look at these sentences:

Someone was laughing. (-ing forms part of verb phrase)
Laughing is good for you. (-ing is the subject of the verb)
I couldn’t stop laughing. (-ing follows verbs like stop, start, like, enjoy, etc.)
The laughing policeman... (-ing pre-modifies a noun, like an adjective)
I heard someone laughing. (-ing follows a verb of perception, such as hear, see, etc., plus noun)
The person laughing is my boss. (-ing post-modifies the noun, like a relative clause)

Identify the use of -ing in the sentences below.

3. Verbs that take -ing.

Put these verbs into three groups:

  • Verbs that take -ing (like finish)
  • Verbs that take to + infinitive (like want)
  • Verbs that can take -ing or to + infinitive, but maybe with a difference of meaning (like try)

4. Verbs that take -ing.

Choose the best answer to complete the sentences.

5. -ing as subject.

Match the two parts of the sentences.

6. Post-modifying nouns with -ing.

Look at the photo and complete the sentences with the correct names.

7. Post-modifying nouns with -ing.

The man who is wearing the green sweater is Ted.
The man wearing the green sweater is Ted.

Delete words in these sentences to make -ing post-modification. In some sentences it is not possible.

For example:

The man who is wearing the green sweater is Ted.
Who was the person you were talking to last night?
(no deletion possible)

Select words to delete them.
