I studied architecture at the state university. After I graduated, I immediately applied for lots of jobs and managed to get a few interviews. It wasn't difficult to get work in big offices, but the pay wasn't very good and the work wasn't so interesting. In big companies like those, the idea was that you start at the bottom and work your way up the ladder, eventually getting promoted.
I decided on a different approach. I started working for a friend of mine who'd set up a small construction company, and I was able to design and supervise the building of houses and other small projects. It was a great experience and I learnt an incredible amount during that time.
From there I went on to set up a small office with two other people who I'd graduated with. Subsequently we've split up, and I work in my own practice now. This suits me well. It gives me flexibility and freedom, but, of course, less financial security. Another thing about working at home is that it's not a day job – it's hard to get away from your work. It's always there in front of you, but you do have that flexibility to work hard and get the job done when there is a deadline.
