But, however; although, even though; in spite of, despite

These words link opposing ideas, but the forms following them and the punctuation are different.

  • He is intelligent, but he can't get a job.
  • He is intelligent. However, he can't get a job.

In sentences using although, even though, in spite of and despite, the clauses can change position.
