4. Reading.
Read the three postcards sent by people on holiday. Who’s doing what? Choose the correct option.
Dear Mum and Dad,
Paris is beautiful! The hotel is miles away from the city centre but it’s cheap and clean. The receptionist speaks English but Geoff and I are practising our French when we can. Sometimes I have to ask people to speak more slowly, but I can understand more or less. Yesterday, we went sightseeing and visited some of the most famous monuments. We had lunch in a café but it was really expensive – today we’re taking sandwiches with us! The weather is good and I’m writing this postcard sitting in a park in the sun. We’ll go for a walk around the city this afternoon and visit some museums. See you on Saturday!
Love,
Jane and Geoff
Dear Margaret,
I hope you are well. I’m writing to you from Greece. As you can see from the postcard, I’m in Athens. I’m staying with a friend from university who lives in the city centre and she’s taking me sightseeing. Last week, I went to the island of Crete and I had a fantastic time sunbathing and swimming in the sea. It’s really hot in the city and I’m having a rest this afternoon, but we’re going out tonight to a local restaurant – the food here is great. After dinner, there is traditional Greek dancing! I’m here for another week, and then I’m back in the UK. See you soon!
Lots of love,
Olga
Dear Pete,
I’m writing to you from a hospital in France! I came here with Jack, Sarah and Oliver to go skiing in the mountains, but I had an accident on the first day and fractured my leg! It’s very boring lying here in bed with nothing to do. The nurses are very friendly, but they don’t speak English and I don’t speak French. The others are staying in the ski resort, but Jack comes to visit me every evening. I’m reading lots of books and sleeping a lot. It’s very peaceful here, but it’s not the adventure holiday that I planned! If everything goes OK, I’ll leave the hospital next week and I’ll be home on Friday. Speak to you then.
5. Listening.
Read the questions first, then listen to Sophie describing her holiday photos to her friend and mark the statements true or false. Remember that you can listen more than once.
