1. Listen.
1. Pronunciation.
Pronunciation of past of regular verbs
Regular verbs in the past tense end with the letters ed.
When a regular verb ends with the letter t or d, we pronounce the ed ending as /ɪd/.
| started | /stɑːrtɪd/ | |
| ended | /endɪd/ |
With all other regular verbs the ed ending is pronounced as /t/ or /d/.
If the verb ends with /p/, /f/, /s/, /ʃ/, /ʧ/ or /k/ (an unvoiced sound), we pronounce the ed ending as /t/.
For example:| worked | /wɜːkt/
| finished | /fɪn.ɪʃt/ | |
| watched | /wɒtʃ/ |
If the verb ends with any other sound (a voiced sound), we pronounce the ed ending as /d/.
For example:| arrived | /əraɪvd/
| played | /pleɪd/ | |
| listened | /lɪsnd/ |
