Both for and since can be used with the present perfect to refer to how long something has been happening.

I've been trying to contact you since 10 o'clock!
We've been talking for three hours; let's make a decision now.

The difference is this:

Since tells us when the situation or action started.
For tells us the duration of the situation or action until now.

Do these time expressions go with for or since? Put the time phrases in the correct box.

9. Finished and unfinished situations.

Note the difference between these two sentences:

  1. Claudio has worked in this department for 10 years.
  2. Claudio worked in this department for 10 years.

The difference is:
The situation in sentence 1 is unfinished.
In sentence 2 the situation is finished.
