Prepositions of time

Prepositions of time: at / in / on / from / to

At, on and in are all used with time expressions.

At is used for points of time.

  • I'll see you at 4:30 p.m.
  • The bus arrives at midnight.
  • We went shopping at the weekend.

On is used for days and dates.

  • They play tennis on Fridays.
  • My birthday is on April 24.

In is used for other periods of time.

  • We are going to Italy in the summer.
  • I checked my email in the morning.
  • The shop will open in July.

From and to are also used to say when something starts and finishes.

  • Norma works from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

No preposition is used with last, next, yesterday, today or tomorrow.

  • What time will you arrive next Thursday?
  • He phoned me last week.
  • Did you see my brother yesterday?
  • We're going to talk about it tomorrow.
