Couple Find Rare Gold Coins
February 26, 2014

A Californian couple went for a walk with their dog on their property. The woman stopped to look at an old can and was amazed to find it was filled with gold coins dating from 1847 to 1894. The husband and wife went to get their metal detector and found seven more cans containing 1,427 coins. Experts estimate the rare coins, which were in near-perfect condition, to be worth over $10 million. The coins were buried next to an old tree and nobody has any idea who put them there. The $5, $10 and $20 coins were stored in date order: the coins from the 1840s and 1850s were in one can, and the newer coins were in other cans. The dates and the method indicate that the person who put the money there was using the cans as a personal bank and didn’t obtain them in a robbery. The couple decided to remain anonymous because they don’t want people to treat them differently and because they don’t want people with metal detectors coming to their property to look for more gold.
