The original inspiration for StreetBank came when Sam Stevens started lending things to his neighbours. First he lent them a pint of milk, and later he lent them some chairs for a party. He didn’t know his neighbours but when he started lending them things and they started lending him things, they became friends. Sam thought about the fact that sometimes people have to buy things that they only need to use occasionally, like a ladder or drill. Instead of buying a new drill, he thought, why don’t people ask their neighbours if they have a drill to lend them? However, nowadays many people don’t know their neighbours, so Sam decided to start a website for people in the same street to contact each other.  Users of the website can offer to lend their neighbours the things they need or give them things they don’t use any more. The website is also used to give people a hand.  An old woman needed help with her garden and the neighbours organised a day and time to do the work. A lot of people came to help her and the work was done very quickly. The StreetBank website now has more than 20,000 members. People enjoy the community spirit it creates, and it is a great way to recycle and share resources.
