there is / there are

We use there is / there are + noun to say that something exists or to describe where it is.
  • There's a pizza in the fridge.
  • There are some shops at the airport.
  • There were a lot of people at the concert. (past)
Affirmative Negative Question
There is a pen in my bag. There isn't a pen in my bag. Is there a pen in your bag?
There are some apples in the kitchen. There aren't any apples in the kitchen. Are there any apples in the kitchen?

Note: We can also use there is / there are + no + noun to make negative sentences.

There aren't any shops here. = There are no shops here.
