A: Labelling a map

In this group of exercises you will review the labelling a map task type.

TIP:

Looking closely at the maps or illustrations in a question can help you to predict vocabulary that you are probably going to hear and will need to recognise. To label a map you will need to be familiar with language that describes location, as well as vocabulary of geographical features, buildings and structures.

1. Points of the compass.

In this group of exercises you will listen to a description of a children's holiday camp. Before you listen, check that you know the points of the compass in English. Put the words in the compass.

2. Features on a map.

Look at the map of an island. Complete the information.

3. Holiday camp vocabulary.

5. Label a diagram.

Now listen and label the diagram. Two of the options are NOT used.

B: Paraphrasing

In this group of exercises you will practise recognising synonyms and paraphrasing.

TIP:

Before listening, you are given time to look at the questions and the options for the answers. Ideas are often expressed using different words from the recording. It is important to listen not only for key words that are included in the questions and answers but also for words with similar meanings.

TIP:

The options for each answer may be mentioned in the recording using synonyms or different words to express the same idea.  Before you listen, make sure you read the questions carefully and decide if the options mentioned in the recording provide the correct answer or are there as a distraction.

TIP:

In the following exercises you will listen to an interview with a Grand Prix driver. You will be asked to complete information in a table. For this type of question it is important that you interpret the information you are given and use this to help predict probable answers. This way, you will have a clear idea of what information you are listening for.

TIP:

It's important to read the question carefully to see if you need to write a number, or one, two, or three words for each answer. Then try to anticipate the types of answers you are listening for.
